The Nintendo 3DS is the first and only console to offer real 3D graphics without glasses and is the latest in Nintendo’s handheld arsenal. Using a stereoscopic 3D display on the upper screen it creates an entire new world of pop out game play possibilities.

The 3DS bundles is jam packed with unique gameplay mechanics and features, the Motion and Gyro sensors are plenty of fun and have you spinning around the room. An in-built 3D camera lets you capture those perfect snaps in the 3rd Dimension! A 3D Depth slider can be used to adjust the 3D intensity to your liking and can play games in 2D better than any Nintendo Handheld ever before. Just like the previous DS consoles you have a choice of multiple colours from Aqua Blue, Cosmo Black, Pearl Pink, Flame Red and Ice White

The 3DS is home to plenty of Nintendo’s biggest franchises which you won’t find anywhere else including Mario, Zelda, Star fox and for the first time ever all in glorious 3D! The 3DS is also backwards compatible with all your DS games so you can play all your favourite DS classics!

Nintendo 3DS - Whats in the Box?

Out of the box the Nintendo 3DS comes accompanied with your standard accessories. The 3DS Console, Charging Cradle, 1 x Stylus, AC adapter, 5 x Augmented Reality Cards and our favourite: Instructions! There are tons of cracking Nintendo 3DS Deals out there though so let us help you get the most out of your hard earned money! The 3DS also gets 2GB of SD storage, the 3DS XL however comes with 4GB SD storage as standard

3DS XL

The 3DS XL is a brand new version of the Nintendo 3DS, with a bigger screen it improves the 3D capability of the console and create a much more intuitive environment. Available in a new selection of colours to including: blue/black, red/black and silver/black.

The 3DS XL bundles together all the great features of the 3DS console but adding a longer battery life (Approx 3.5 6.5 hours), more SD card space (4GB included) and of course the bigger screen, that is 90% larger than the Nintendo 3DS! One more thing, the Nintendo 3DS XL doesn’t come with an AC adapter for some crazy reason, these can be bought separately though.

SpotPass and StreetPass

Nintendo's Street Pass technology

Two very interesting features of the 3DS console is SpotPass and StreetPass. Spotpass will connect your 3DS system to a wirless internet access point automatically where special items will be downloaded such as exclusive 3D videos, in game items, add on and promotions from Nintendo Zone. This works while your console is in sleep mode so it might be in your backpack and if you see a blue LED flashing when you next go to use your console, you might have a little surprise!

StreetPass is all about bringing fellow 3DS players together, when passing another 3DS user the console will exchance Mii characters, high scores, and custom characters. You have full control over the data you send and the data you receive also.

Nintendo DS and 3DS Timeline

First Nintendo DS

Nintendo launched the Nintendo DS, the first games console to use a touch screen that allowed users to control games with a stylus pen. The DS marked the beginning of the 2nd best selling console ever developed (behind the ps2) and the top selling hand held. The first DS featured touch controls, voice recognition and dual screens that opened up a completely new way of gaming.

Nintendo DS Lite Launches

Before the initial announcement of the PS Vita, a number of websites and video game publishers such as EA confirmed that such a console existed and they already had their hands on the developer kits. Then the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, Shuhei Yoshida, admitted in an interview that there was indeed a new console being developed.

Nintendo DSi Released

The DSi was released to rival Sony’s PlayStation Portable, and had a very similar design to the DS lite. It added two cameras, SD card slots, ability to play music and it also introduced the DSi Shop, which made digital services and games available to download.

Nintendo DSi XL

Nintendo remodelled the DSi to feature a much larger screen, and was bigger in size over all. It improved the battery life drastically and also improved the viewing angle of the screens. It was the perfect console for sharing and playing together and reading.

DSi Stampedes and 3D Rumours

Amazon are renowned for their incredible Black Friday deals and the release of a special edition Orange DSi with a reduced price tag that came with Super Mario Party DS led to a massive boost in Nintendo DS sales. Rumours in 2010 also began emerging about Nintendo’s next revolutionary handheld console and forced Nintendo to announce the works of a 3D console.

Nintendo in 3D

Nintendo announced the release date and price of their brand new console, and on March the 25th the console was launched, 3DS Deals were very expensive however priced at £229.99 at initial release and the console fell short of its sales target. Nintendo responded by taking a 40% price reduction in to the console which led to the 3DS becoming the fastest selling console.

More Games Please

The 3DS was shunned for its lack of games, so Nintendo announced several brilliant 3DS titles including Star Fox 3D, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Kid Icarus: Uprising and Mario Kart. At the same time the Nintendo 3Shop and 3DS internet browser were release via a system firmware update allowing users to download digital games and browse the web.

A Year On

As of March the 6th Nintendo have sold over 4.5 million 3DS units compared to the DS that sold 2.4 million units in the same time. Nintendo are supporting the 3DS with some great games and Kid Icarus was released in March this year.

Nintendo announced a new model of the Nintendo 3DS, the 3DS XL of course! A much bigger 3D console that will be available on the 26th of March and with 3 colour choices, Red/Black, Silver/Black or Blue/Black. The 3DS XL bundles dont come with an AC charger, so if you don't have one be sure to pick on up!

What the experts say...

Don't take our word for it. Here's what some of the game industries leading voices have to say about the Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS provides an impressive 3D gaming experience without the need for special glasses. There's a 3D effect slider, it shoots and displays 3D photographs with its dual back-facing cameras, and it has a single front-facing camera

Nintendo 3DS wowed us with its glasses-free, autostereoscopic 3D technology, but an over-inflated price, lack of games and confusing marketing saw it fail to capture the imagination of a public swept away by their cheap, easy and plentiful iOS and Android fun supply.

Aesthetically, the 3DS XL's ditched the glossy finish of the regular model and adopted a matte plastic material which, if you ask us, it doesn't look quite as good as its smaller cousin - however the new plastic is a lot more smudge resistant.
